L & S Tire's Products * Tires As Fuel

L & S Tire Company provides whole tire fuel, TDF, to Ash Grove Cement Company in Seattle, Washington.

Tires replace a portion of the coal and natural gas used to make Portland Cement.  From 2003 to 2005, the number of facilities using tire derived fuel jumped 20%, with 117 facilities permitted.  Tire derived fuel is a high quality fuel, burning 13,000 - 15,000 BTUs per pound.  Environmental Protection Agency testing has shown that TDF has a higher BTU value than coal.  They recognized, in an EPA Resource Conservation Challenge that the use of tire derived fuels is a viable alternative to the use of fossil fuels and supports the responsible use of TDF in Portland Cement kilns and other industrial facilities.
According to the Portland Cement Association, the combustion of TDF produces less carbon dioxide per unit of energy than coal.  The intense heat of the kiln ensures complete destruction of tires.  There is no smoke or visible emissions.

A study by Eiichiro Yamaguchi, in his doctorate thesis for the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign found that 1,000,000 tires used in place of coal would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 19.5%.

We are proud of our contributions in this area.  Currently 50% - 55% of the tires received by our Lakewood facility are consumed there.
